Sat-through seats and tired tables, made bonny again

I’m Craig Williams. From my workshop in Bankfoot, near Perth, I recane and rush chairs, French polish, repair and restore furniture, and make new pieces to order.

What happens to your chair

A hand-caned seat, from the day it arrives to the day it goes home. The new cane goes through the same holes in the frame, strand by strand, in six passes.

  1. A hand-caned seat with a broken, sagging hole in the middle

It comes in split and sagging.

  2. The old cane is cut out.

  3. New cane is woven in by hand.

  4. Pair of slender bedroom chairs with newly hand-caned seats

It goes home tight and even.

Cane, bergère, rush and cord, woven by hand

Seat weaving is slow, fiddly work, and there aren’t many folk left who do it. The chair you’ve sat on for years gets to stay in the family.

  • Chair caning

The classic six-way pattern on bedroom, dining and nursery chairs, woven through holes drilled round the seat.

  • Bergère

Deep armchairs and suites with caned backs, sides and seats. A great many holes, and very much worth saving.

  • Rush

Twisted rush worked from the corners in, so four triangles meet in the middle. Ladder-backs, stools and Orkney-style chairs.

  • Cord

Paper and Danish cord seats on mid-century chairs, rewoven tight and even.

BeforeAfter

Drag the handle to see the same table, on dust sheets and then finished.

From dust sheets to dinner for twelve

A twin pedestal D-end table, restored and polished in its own dining room.

Water rings, lifting veneer, a leg knocked loose in a house move, a finish gone dull. All types of repair and restoration, antique and modern.

The aim is always the same: keep as much of the original as possible, and make the repair disappear into it.

Repair and restoration More before and afters

French polishing, done the patient way

Shellac, a cotton rubber and a great many thin coats, until the grain looks deep enough to dive into. Modern finishes too, where they suit how a piece is used.

Perthshire is full of bonny old tables that just need their shine back.

And when there’s nothing to mend, I make it new

Farmhouse tables, benches, beds, fitted shelving and wee boxes, made to order and made to fit.

Perthshire is Big Tree Country. Oak, ash, elm and Scots pine all grow within sight of the workshop, and if you have a timber in mind, ask.

“The removal company dropped my antique Grandfather’s oak extension dining table and smashed the joint on one leg. Craig responded to my desperate plea for help... He recovered and restored a loved piece of family history.”

Review on Yell, July 2023

“My Uncle Charles’ nursery chair was in a sad state. Scruffy, loose inlay and a seat that needed re-caning big-time... would recommend this master craftsman to anyone.”

Review on Yell, October 2017

“I also have a cherished birds-eye maple dressing table that he repaired and managed to turn into an even lovelier side table.”
